Building a card that works
Keep it short, or the code gets dense
Everything you type is encoded into the pattern, so a full card with a long job title and a street address produces a much denser grid than a name, mobile and email. On a printed business card — where the code is usually under 2 cm — density is what makes a scan fail.
Fill the fields your customer actually needs. Mobile and email carry almost every follow-up.
Australian formatting
- Write mobiles as 0412 345 678 for local readability, or +61 412 345 678 if you deal with anyone overseas.
- The ABN field is optional and lands in the contact’s notes. Handy for tradies and consultants whose clients need it at invoice time.
- Landlines belong in the same format: 02 9000 0000, or +61 2 9000 0000 internationally.

What is a vCard QR code?
It is a QR code containing a vCard — the standard contact file format phones already understand. Scanning it opens a “Add contact” screen with your details filled in, rather than opening a website.
Does it work without an app on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both platforms read vCard 3.0 from the built-in camera app and offer to save the contact. No reader app and no account are needed on either side.
Can I include my ABN?
Yes. The optional ABN field is written into the contact’s notes, so it travels with the card. Useful for tradies, consultants and anyone whose clients need an ABN to raise a purchase order.
Can I change my details later?
Not on a printed static code — the details are encoded in the pattern. If your mobile changes often, put a code on your website’s contact page instead and update the page.
How small can the code be on a business card?
About 2 cm square is the practical floor, and only if you keep the data short and the quiet zone intact. Always print one test card and scan it before ordering a box of 500.
